Our Discipleship Programs..

Do you admire Jesus' disciples? These men of leadership were able to maintain focus and intensity while teaching a message that was not well accepted in their day. Yet they began as weak, timid and selfish. Then... they spent three years with the Son of God.

We all understand the need for education. Colleges, universities, special workshops and seminars are so available to our culture. The common thread in a tendency towards textbook orientation. Yet we all know that the most effective style of learning in any culture is by doing. Those who know how to apply the text are further ahead than those who only know it.

Our goal at Camp Sagitawa is to teach the application of biblical Christianity to the whole life. We are therefore committed to discipleship. The two are inseparable. Find a disciple and show him/her how to apply Scripture in practical daily life.

Since the goal of discipleship is to reproduce strong and healthy Christians, we have found that we as we disciple our staff, they in turn learn to disciple others as well.

While we try to disciple all our staff, we are operating three main junior staff discipleship programs.
  • SEED - Servant, Equipped, Encouraged, Discipled --- Serving at the Main Camp / SWAT
  • COLT - Christian Outdoor Leadership Training --- Serving at Trail Rides
  • Work Crew --- Serving at the Main Camp
The three programs are very much alike. The participants are being equipped for Christian life through practical experience mixed with biblical teaching. They are given leadership opportunities, while serving the camp, and enabling other staff to be more effective in their ministry. We appreciate all that they do to help. Isn't this how discipleship ought to be?

Each program provides a tremendous challenge to growth, while focusing on these objectives:
  • To seek biblical truth and endeavor to apply it to your whole life.
  • To exemplify a Christ-like attitude of service to staff and campers.
  • To support, in good spirit, the traditions and regulations of the camp.
  • To welcome instruction and seek to benefit from it.
  • To be willing to perform ordinary tasks conscientiously and cheerfully.
Each program is intense with lots of hard work, fun, friendship building and team experience. It is a time that you will never forget. It will change the way you think.

Our SEED Program..

With the emphasis on discipleship training, SEED stands for Servants, Encouraged, Equipped, Discipled. It reflects a unique and exciting program, which includes a time of tremendous challenge and growth. Successful applicants will be involved in Bible Study, character building, skill development and ministry experience. The program is intense, with plenty of hard work, friendship building and team experience. The program is 8 weeks in length, and so we give a priority to applicants who are able to commit to a longer time.

SEEDs apply their learning practically by being involved in the whole camp program. They supervise campers, help teach skills and lead games, activities and chapels. They also help with cleaning, and fill in many gaps to help make the program run smoothly and enabling the cabin leader staff to mentor campers more effectively.

Applicants
About 16 students are accepted each summer. Applicants must be at least 16 years old in the year that they apply. We have also accepted a one or two Junior SEEDs each week (15 yrs old), though they are probationary for a maximum of 3 weeks. We seek applicants who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and who enjoy being with kids. A limited number of positions are available. SEED participants may apply for more than one year. Apply early to avoid disappointment.

No Charge
Since the SEED also benefit the camp, we no longer charge to recover any of the actual costs of food, accommodations, training staff, and materials. Join us this Summer
The SEED come with enthusiasm and energy, and have so much potential. It is exciting to get to know them and see them grow. Previous participants say that they still think about their experience even a year later. An exciting and challenging time they "would not have missed for the world."

2010 Schedule
  • Arrive at Camp: 7 pm
  • Training Wkends: June 18-20 and June 25-27
  • Summer Camps: June 28 - Aug 21 or 23

Our COLT Program..

COLT stands for Christian Outdoor Leadership Training. At Trail Rides successful applicants will have the opportunity to be involved in horsemanship, developing leadership and teaching skills, growing in their walk with the Lord, learning the value of serving one another, and having a fun while doing it.

The outdoor setting gives this program a unique feature that many other camps do not have. It is a lot of hard work, but the friendships and decisions made for eternity make it all worth while. COLTS are an important part of our staff, and we are thankful for those that come each summer.

We try to involve COLTS in all aspects of camp. They will have the opportunity to serve in the following areas: help lead Bible studies, plan and lead chapel services, plan and lead games, help with chores (kitchen, horsemanship, etc.), being involved with the campers, as well as many other “little things” that help the camp to run smoothly. Our desire is to help these young people become young men and women who desire to serve God with their whole hearts.

Applicants
The number of COLTS that come to Trail Rides each summer varies from year to year. We can take up to 5 colts per camp. Applicants must be at least 16 years old in the year that they apply. They can come for one or two camps. Apply early to avoid disappointment.

No Charge
There is no charge for the COLT program.

Join us this Summer
Many COLTS come back as senior staff. Many enjoy it and cannot wait for the next summer to come. So come on out and be a part of the staff at Trail Rides for the summer.

2010 Schedule
There are three camps in the month of July. Staff training takes place the day before each camp starts.
  • Trail Ride 1 --- July 1-10
  • Trail Ride 2 --- July 11-18
  • Trail Ride 3 --- July 20-29

Our Work Crew Program..

Our Work Crew Program also emphasizes discipleship training, and is very similar to our SEED Program. It reflects a unique and exciting program, which includes a time of tremendous challenge and growth. Successful applicants will be involved in Bible Study, character building, skill development and serving. The program is intense, with plenty of hard work, friendship building and team experience. The program is 8 weeks in length, and so we give a priority to applicants who are able to commit to a longer time.

Though the Work Crew does have some practical time with the camp program, the main difference between them and the SEED is that the SEED focus on the program while the Work Crew focus on work projects.

Applicants
About 4 female students are accepted each summer. Applicants must be at least 16 years old in the year that they apply. We seek applicants who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and who enjoy being with kids. A limited number of positions are available. Participants may apply for more than one year. Apply early to avoid disappointment.

No Charge
Since the Work Crew also benefits the camp, we do not charge to recover any of the actual costs of food, accommodations, training staff, and materials. Join us this Summer
The Work Crew come with enthusiasm and energy, and have so much potential. It is exciting to get to know them and see them grow. Previous participants say that they still think about their experience even a year later. An exciting and challenging time they "would not have missed for the world."

Dear Applicant..

I am pleased to send you an application. Please enter the process prayerfully. We offer successful candidates an opportunity to live and experience discipleship ministry. Our desire is to equip the team to motivate others to follow Christ, as we model a practical and effective ministry. The benefit is life-long.

The enclosed application provides information on our procedural and practical expectations.

The 'Consent for Disclosure' of Criminal Record Information is part of the application process and needs to be taken to your local RCMP with ID and a pre-stamped envelope. Follow the directions on the application page of our website.
Young Offender legislation does not protect you from having to complete this form. It does, however, protect the actual record from being released to camp. The search will only indicate whether or not a matching record may exist. Due to the nature of working closely with children for long periods of time, the camp may request full disclosure from the applicant.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely in Christ;
Gary Pryzner, Director

Expectations of Staff..

Basic Pattern for Life
Camp Sagitawa asks our staff and Seed to remember that everything they say and do will affect the lives of campers. The basic behaviour can be summed up in two passages of Scripture.
* "But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak." 1 Corinthians 8:9
* "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." Colossians 3:12-17
Our desire is to provide an environment where your passion for Christ and your focus on ministry can be sharpened, making you more effective in ministry. If you have questions, please contact the camp office.

Alcohol, smoking, and non-prescription drugs
We expect that you will abstain from alcohol, smoking, and non-prescription drugs, during the duration of your time at Sagitawa. This includes any time away between camp sessions. If you come to camp with a habit and are hoping to break it while here, we ask that you inform us about the struggle. We are gracious, but we expect honesty and integrity.

Sexual Behaviours
We expect that your talk at camp be wholesome, and that you refrain from sexual jokes and discussions. We believe that God intended sex to take place only within the context of marriage between a man and woman. Many campers come without any idea of what God wants, and can be taught these things in a wholesome way. If your lifestyle and teaching cannot reflect these beliefs, then Sagitawa is not the place for you.

Romance
We expect that you are coming to camp to serve campers. We believe that God honours the process of courtship. God also honours intense ministry. There is a time for everything, and these two do not mix well for two reasons. First, it is unfair to your partner that the relationship is constantly interrupted by intense ministry. (Summer ministry is hard enough on married couples that already have security within their relationship.) Second, it is unfair to the camp ministry when the relationship constantly sidetracks your focus, and creates division on team.

We encourage friendship, and respect those who put desired relationships on hold for the summer. We define a romantic relationship as one where couples begin to seek each other out regularly and exclusively. We are not going to argue about whether you are doing your work, because what we seek is your focus. If we see that a relationship is affecting this focus, we will approach you as a couple and ask that it stop, or that one, or both of you leave the camp ministry immediately.

Spiritual Submission
We expect our staff to desire Christ. Time will be given during training to spend lengthy personal time in prayer and listening to God. We also provide discipling and mentoring relationships for you to grow in Christ. We ask that you come prepared to take advantage of these opportunities with a positive outlook for what God will do in and through you this summer. (Please note that this may not apply to short term or staff brought in for other reasons. A camper's mom assisting in the kitchen for a week is not required to fit into these spiritual aspects of camp ministry.)

General
Dress should be modest at all times. We ask female staff to wear long t-shirts over bikinis. General appearance should not draw undue attention to yourself.

We also want you to be aware that you are coming to a remote site. Communication and travel is not always accessible, and becomes your own expense.

Criminal Record Consent..

Our policy requires that seasonal staff complete criminal record checks annually.

Two types

Name-based checks are not able to verify identities, and therefore when any name returns a red flag, the check will state that the applicant "may or may not" have a criminal record." Name-based checks are sufficient when they are marked "none located". They are also quicker and less costly (available through your local RCMP). The RCMP will often waive the fee for volunteers who provide a letter from the organization.

Fingerprint-based checks prove the person's identity and provide the details of the record. Camp policy requires fingerprint-based checks for any applicant that "may have" a criminal record. If you are aware that your record will be returned in this way, then please (1) indicate this on your staff application, (2) disclose the basic details of that record to the Camp Director, and (3) complete a fingerprint-based record check (available through the Civil RCMP). If the Camp Director believes that the substance of a record has any bearing on the safety of children, we will not be able to accept your application to serve at camp without further appeal and consideration by the Board. All information in this regard is kept in the highest confidence at the Camp Office.

Two methods

The first method involves you physically going to a branch of the RCMP as indicated above. We would strongly suggest you follow this procedure. The second method is for us to do it online after you arrive at camp. Our online system only works for name-based checks, and will always cost the camp $25 per check. In most cases Camp will invoice you for the fee because you could have done it for free by following the above guidelines.

Basic information

Since you will be working with children and youth, you will need to obtain all 3 forms. Remember to ask for the proper type of record check from the respective branch of the RCMP. Also remember to bring 2 pieces of personal ID. It is advisable to fill the forms out while you are there because you will also need to present the filled out forms in person. Select all 4 categories in the search request.

Please note the information below for your assistance in filling out the forms, and contact us if you have any questions.
